There are several ways to record a gif from your screen. If you want to get it from a youtube video you can use giphy.com or if you are trying to record a small part of your screen there’s screentogif.com for windows.

If you are a Linux user and want to get a lightweight solution to record your screen as a GIF to share on articles or blog posts, Peek is the way to go.

To install it in Linux Mint or Ubuntu, run the following commands in the terminal.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peek-developers/stable
sudo apt update
sudo apt install peek

After these commands have finished, click on the menu button on the tasks bar, and type PEEK.

You will get the transparent box in which you can adjust the width and height to the part of the screen you want to record. Once it’s selected, click on the green button ‘Record as GIF’ and hit Stop when you are done.

Your file save window will allow you to select where you want your file to be saved in the disk. And you are ready to start sharing whatever you need.

If you are using a different distribution of Linux, such as Fedora, Debian, Solus, or any other, you can find the installation instructions in https://github.com/phw/peek
